Sports Recap: Big Blowout in College World Series Finals

College Baseball:

         Vanderbilt Commodores –Loss 9-0

The Vanderbilt Commodores walked off the field last night as the runner up in the College World Series. Vandy fought hard to make it to the finals, but they just couldn’t get the 2nd win they needed to become champs. Instead, Mississippi State won their first ever National Championship in any team sport. Kumar Rocker took the mound for Vanderbilt and it looked early on that it was going to be a long, tough game for Vanderbilt. In total, Vandy committed 3 fielding errors, bringing their postseason total to 12. Mississippi State jumped out to a quick 3-run lead thanks to some of those errors. The back-breaking inning came in the 7th. Vandy was already down 5-0 but the game was still somewhat manageable. A few base runners and maybe they could comeback. However, in the 7th, both Tanner and Clark homered for Mississippi State and brought home 4 total runs. The deficit for Vanderbilt was now 9-0. It was a massive struggle for the Commodore hitters all night. Before the 8th inning, the only baserunners Vandy had were due to walks. Finally, in the 8th Young singled to break up the no-hitter. The Commodores couldn’t get anything else going and they ended up losing 9-0.

 

Nashville Sounds: Loss 2-1

          The Nashville Sounds dropped a close one in extra innings to their rivals the Louisville Bats. Nashville scored the first run of the game in the first inning when Zach Green hit an RBI double, but that was all they could get to cross the plate. Louisville tied things in the 7th off a wild pitch from Weigel and then in the top of the 10th inning Jose Barrero hit a SAC fly to bring home the go-ahead run. The Sounds had opportunities in the bottom of the 10th but never capitalized and they lost 2-1.

 

In other Sounds’ related news Ashby got his first major league start yesterday. It did not go as planned unfortunately as Ashby never made it out of the first inning. He pitched 2/3 inning, issuing 3 walks, and giving up 7 runs (4 being earned runs). Even with difficult start, the Brewers still came back and won 15-7 so Ashby got a no-decision in the contest.

 

Also, Ethan Small made the 2021 Futures Game lineup!

 

Atlanta Braves: Win 20-2

          The Atlanta Braves exploded for TWENTY runs in last night’s contest. The Braves were led offensively by Ozzie Albies, who set a career record in RBIs, runs scored, and hits all in one game. Albies drove in 7 total runs and had 5 hits (2 of which were home runs). Acuńa Jr hit his 22nd home run on the year in this one as well but make no doubts Ozzie Albies came ready to play and took full advantage of his opportunities. Max Fried earned his 5th win on the season on the mound.

 

 

Cincinnati Reds: Loss 7-5

         The Cincinnati Reds only managed to get in 6 innings in this game due to weather. Maybe Cincinnati could have rallied late in the game for a comeback win, but it didn’t matter because the game was called due to rain when the Padres led 7-5. The Reds jumped out to a quick lead as they scored 4 runs in the first inning. Castellanos continues to be a threat at the plate as he hit another home run in the first inning for the Reds. The biggest factor in the game was Trent Grisham. He hit a home run in the 2nd inning to chip away at the Reds’ lead, and then in the top of the 5th he hit a Grand Slam to give the Padres’ the lead before the game was called.
